MUMBAI: The enduring battle between Microsoft and Apple continues in India, too. This time it’s the launch of Apple’s new operating system Mac OS X Leopard that is heating up the technology scene. The new version of the software that runs Apple’s Mac computers will be sold in India at Rs 6,200 for the single-user version and at Rs 9,660 in a five-user family pack. The operating system was launched internationally on October 26 and has since taken the fight to Windows Vista, the equivalent software from Microsoft.

Apple claims to have included a plethora of new features in the operating system. Darren Sng, senior product marketing manager, Apple, said, “We have packed more than 300 new features into the leopard. We believe that our philosophy of keeping things simple and user friendly would help us when it comes to competition.”
On the features side Leopard boasts of improvements like desktop with stacks, new finder, quick look, spaces, time machine and ichat.

In a move aimed at attracting users in the server market Apple also launched the Mac OS X Server Leopard which will retail in India at Rs 23,000 for a ten-client edition and at Rs 46,200 for the unlimited client version. This segment is dominated globally by products from Microsoft. Apple refused to discuss their sales targets for India.

A technology blogger, familiar with the operating systems market told DNA Money, “Apple seems to be aiming to increase sales of its computer hardware too by launching the Leopard at such competitive prices. It is going to be especially tough to crack the server market as that would mean corporates changing their hardware too.”

Microsoft had released its Windows Vista this year to mixed reviews and incompatibility issues.
