NEW DELHI: In her first reaction to the sting operation conducted by Tehelka on the Gujarat riots, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said that the “recent expose revealed that what had happened in Gujarat was inhuman".

She also made it clear that her party would not pull any punches in taking on those behind the communal carnage. “It's the primary responsibility of civil society and all Congressmen to fight this scourge,” she said at a function held to confer the Indira Gandhi National Integration Award.

Sonia added, “If we don't fight these communal and anti social forces, they will one day become a huge danger to secular and democratic structure of the country". Her comments provide a significant insight into the strategy that is likely to be used by the Congress during the Gujarat  polls.

JS Bandukwala and Ram Puniyani received the Indira Gandhi Award. Mukul Wasnik , AICC general secretary said, “By choosing Bandukwala, the Congress’ message is that it stands on the side of victimised.”
