Arjun Rampal talks light-heartedly about the superstar’s newly acquired six-pack abs,  fashion and ‘OSO’ to Kabeer Sharma

MUMBAI: Arjun Rampal rolls up the sleeves of a Tommy Hilfiger shirt to reveal the tattoos of his daughters Myra and Mahikaa on his forearm—a little Beckham-ish wouldn’t you say? We sit back on dining table chairs dragged out into the balcony of his 9 th floor house overlooking the Bandstand sea.

Packs and ponytails
So, who got the ponytail first—he or Shah Rukh Khan? “Well, it’s not about who grew it first. But I have had long hair in my last three to four movies,” he laughs. And does he have an opinion on what everyone in the city is talking about -six packs? “It is definitely motivating. I don’t think people associated him with six packs. He worked four long years at it,” Rampal says, so far so good, only what he says later begins to lose the plot a little. “I think he got inspired to get a six-pack after he saw his son Aryan’s six-pack. Aryan apparently taunted him and said, ‘Dad you have everything but you don’t have a six pack’,” he says. You have half a mind to say, ‘But dude you do know Aryan is just 10’, but then, you let it pass. So, when did he get his six pack? “I don’t have a six pack. I have 18,” he says with a wink.

Filmi fashion
What about Bollywood fashion? Ask him as someone from fashion doing movies, what is the good side of the fence to be on now that Indian fashion is going places and he ducks. Instead, we get a whirlwind lesson of Bollywood fashion. “Fashion in movies, even 10-15 years ago was horrendous. The 60s and 70s were stylish, but the 80s and the 90s were terrible, now it’s getting professional and actors are getting more and more conscious.”

‘Om Shanti Om’
Anyway, now for the reason the interview was conducted in the first place—‘Om Shanti Om’. “I play a horrible, nasty film producer with dirty mannerisms,” he says. Anything close to what he is as a film producer? And he laughs. “No, not close at all. It’s different, but I’m glad I played it. It helped me explore my dark side.” They say everyone has a dark side, don’t they? “Yes, I think we all have dark sides, if someone says he doesn’t, he’s a liar,” he amswers.

Future talk
Speaking of him as a producer would he still be doing other things after ‘I See U’? “Yes, we’re going to make two movies next year. ” Ask him what he’s planning to do on the fashion front (considering he and model wife Mehr Jessia are one of the first couples of Indian fashion, he being Rohit Bal’s muse, and she Tarun Tahiliani’s) and he tells you to wait. Arjun is also doing a movie called ‘EMI’ with Sanjay Dutt, Urmilla Matondkar and ‘a pile’ of other stars. Also in the pipeline is the Farhan Akhtar movie he can’t talk about.

Private truths
“I do realise, we’re public figures, but the family is no one’s concern, a few things should be private,” says Arjun. And what about the people, who’re open about their families? “If you make your home into a circus, then you are a caged animal. Aren’t you?”
