Says Tehelka sting smells of a plot to defame Hindus

While the Shiv Sena is all set to assess the situation in Gujarat after the ‘Tehelka’ sting, its executive president Uddhav Thackeray has come forward to defend its tainted chief minister, Narendra Modi.

“If Lalu Prasad Yadav and Shibu Soren can continue in office despite serious charges of corruption and murder, why not Modi,” Thackeray asked.

Sena secretary Vinayak Raut will visit Gujarat today to meet Babu Bajrangi, who had allegedly bragged about perpetrating in one of the worst carnages in Naroda Patia of Gujarat in 2002 “because Modi had backed the rioters”.

Raut will assess the situation and submit a report to Thackeray.

Meanwhile, in a statement, Thackeray has termed the sting as a plot to defame Hindus.

He said, “Tehelka has targeted Modi at a time when Gujarat is going to polls. Though it reeks of an attempt to grab the Muslim vote bank, one should remember that such favouritism is a blot on the country.”

Terming the activists, who are demanding Modi’s arrest, as pseudo-secularists, Thackeray said, “They are mum about the execution of Afzal Guru, a convict in the Parliament attack case. They won’t talk about the Godhra train fire that killed over 100 ramsevaks.”

Responding to SP leader Abu Asim Azmi’s demand for Modi’s resignation, Thackeray said, “Azmi should also have demanded Mulayam Singh Yadav’s resignation under whose tenure as the UP chief minister sadhus were gunned down during the Ram temple agitation.”
