World champion says privileges extended to Kramnik and Topalov are ridiculous

MUMBAI: Fresh from his new status as the king of 64 square-game, Viswanathan Anand is non-committal on his re-match with Vladimir Kramnik. Speaking to DNA from Chennai, the undisputed world champion said he has not taken a decision on the rematch, which is expected sometime next fall. He, however, has expressed surprise and happiness over the tumultuous reception he has been accorded by the Indian public. Excerpts:

Has the whole thing sunk in?
Yes, it feels great to be a unified world champion. When the National Anthem was played in Mexico, it was a special feeling.

Did you expect to win the title when you reached Mexico?
I don’t think anyone goes to a tournament expecting he will not win it. I knew I had my chances and I’m satisfied the way I played.

But the 13th round match against Grischuk was the turning point?
It was not a turning point but it was a tough match. It, in fact, settled the issue.

Did you expect the reception you are getting at different cities?
Honestly I didn’t. I’m surprised by the welcome. I feel proud.

So what next? How long will you be in India?
I will be here for another three weeks. I’ve not any tournaments lined up immediately.

So which will be your next tournament?
It will be Wijk aan Zee in January. So that’s a long way away. I’ve enough time to prepare.

What about the rematch?
I’ve not thought about it so far.

Will you be playing?
I don’t know. I’m yet to take a final call on this.

Is there a chance that you may not?
I cannot comment at this point of time. I need some time to decide on this.

Do you think it is unfair on Fide’s part to make you play a rematch?
Yes, it is unfair. The rematch privilege is ridiculous.

But how did it happen... Did you sign any contract before the Mexico championship?
I’m looking into the details of the terms and conditions.

Where does Topalov figure in all this? He has lost the title and still gets a rematch option.
Even that is ridiculous. I see it as Fide’s vote-bank politics. The elections last year in Turin sparked off all this rematch decisions.

There is an impression that the Fide has taken you for granted because of your non-controversial nature.
I don’t know if that is true. Fide surely would not have imagined that I would win the title.

Ok, will you explore legal options?
I don’t want to say anything right. I’m going through all the details. I will decide about it soon.

Finally, Kramnik says you were lucky to have won in Mexico.
I don’t expect an ex-champion to say anything else.
