Putting all rumours to a long needed rest, Saif, who arrived for Manish Malhotra’s grand finale at LFW with Kareena in tow, needed hardly any cajoling to state the obvious. “We are very much together,” he drawled, with his new lady love by his side.
The setting was ironic. Last year Kareena had walked the ramp with now ex-boyfriend Shahid Kapoor, now it almost seems he’d never existed. No one breathed a word about him. Or for that matter, Rozza Catalano.
To be fair to them, the stylish and single Saif and the svelte and equally single Kareena Kapoor seem pretty evenly matched. The twosome could well be on the fast track to become the hottest star jodi (both on and off screen) in town. And hey, even the timing is just right. John-Bipasha are passé, and Abhishek-Aishwarya have been talked about ad nauseum. Time for a new flavour.
But will the chemistry translate on-screen as well, or will it go the Shahid-Kareena way? Says trade analyst Amod Mehra, “Audiences will not make the switch as quickly as Kareena and Saif have. They still picture Kareena and Shahid because they have been going around together for the last three years. It will take some time for the fact to sink in. I feel producers will be cautious and gauge their chemistry on-screen in ‘Tashan’ before giving them any price they want.”
Despite the still cautious optimism, the pair has already been finalised for Vishal Bharadwaj’s ‘Mr Mehta and Mrs Singh’. The question is: will this blossoming romance add to appeal of ‘Tashan’? If so, what can we expect for ‘Jab We Met’, which has Kareena playing the lead with her ex-beau Shahid? Can Shahid possibly hope for an upset victory? That would be something!
