MUGHALSARAI/UP: 13 women were killed in a stamped and over 40 people were injured in a stampede in Mughalsarai station, the biggest railway junction in the country.
The mishap occurred when there was a sudden stampede of people who had come out of two two trains which had arrived almost simultaneously on platforms five and six around 1345 hours, Mughalsarai Divisional Railway Manager H K Kala said.
The dead, all women, and the injured, mostly women, were climbing stairs when the stampede took place.
Today was a holy day on the occasion of "putrajaya", a local festival, when fasting women had alighted from trains to go to Varanasi, 20 km away, from here for a bath in the Ganges.
Additional DRM Harindra Rao said the injured have been admitted to hospital and two or three of them have been discharged after treatment.
