The family of the three youths arrested in the murder of 16-year-old Adnan Patrawala cried foul on Tuesday, saying that the police have framed their kids. Meanwhile, the metropolitan magistrate’s court at Andheri on Tuesday remanded two of the three — Sujith Nair, 28, and Ayush Bhatt, 18, — in police custody till August 28. Khimesh Ambavat, 17, will be produced before the juvenile court as he is a minor.

Adnan, son of a businessman, was kidnapped on Saturday and a ransom of Rs 2 crore was demanded of his parents for his safe return. Unfortunately, Adnan was found strangulated to death on Sunday evening on Palm Beach road near Sanpada in Navi Mumbai.

Ayush’s father Arun Bhatt told DNA, “The police had come to our house on Sunday afternoon when Ayush was not there. They told us to contact Ayush and call him home, which we did. After that, they told us that they are taking Ayush with them for investigations as Nair and Ambavat were Ayush’s friends. On Monday we learnt that they have booked Ayush for his involvement in the crime.” Ambavat’s sister said it was impossible for her brother to have been involved in this crime.

Pradeep Shetty, defence lawyer for Ambavat, said when his client returned home on Sunday around 7 pm, he was taken in by the police. “But, according to the police, Adnan was allegedly killed on Sunday around 10.30 pm,” he said. The police said they had evidence to prove that the three were involved in the crime. “On directions given by them, we recovered Adnan’s dead body from Palm Beach road near Sanpada and also Adnan’s car from near Nerul railway station. They have admitted to committing the crime,” said senior inspector Kiran Sonone of Oshiwara police station.

He said all the three had confessed that “had we known the quantum of punishment for murder is much more than kidnapping, then we would not have killed Adnan”. The police are on the lookout for a fourth person. “At this moment we cannot divulge any details about the fourth associate,” said Sonone. He said the police had questioned many friends and relatives of Adnan, apart from those who used to come to play pool at the parlour before zeroing in on Nair, Bhatt
and Ambavat.
