NEW DELHI: A meeting of the CPI(M) Polit Bureau is being held here this weekend in the backdrop of the controversy over the Indo-US nuclear deal.

The meeting of the full Polit Bureau assumes significance as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's statement daring the Left to withdraw support on the nuclear deal issue has rattled the outside supporters.

Left leaders, including Prakash Karat of CPI(M) and AB Bardhan of the CPI, have made several statements indicating that they would not take the matter lying down.

The Left members staged a walkout in both Houses of Parliament during the Prime Minister's statement was indicative enough of the turmoil among these parties.

Senior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury on Monday said the Polit Bureau would debate the pros and cons of the situation arising out of the signing of the 123 agreement with the US.

The Prime Minister has already made it known that the deal was not re-negotiable, but expressed hope that differences with the Left would be resolved amicably.

The Left parties, which discussed the 123 agreement a week ago, have rejected the Indo-US civil nuclear deal and asked the government not to proceed with operationalising it.

Seeking a review of the strategic aspects of Indo-US relations in Parliament, the four-party alliance has decided to press for a constitutional amendment to bring major international treaties and certain bilateral agreements for approval in the House.

The meeting of the top CPI(M) leadership also comes in the backdrop of the CPI's insistence that it was time for the Left to redefine its ties with the UPA.

The Polit Bureau meeting would also take stock of the party organisation in Kerala, where two top leaders Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan and state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan have been suspended from the highest decision-making body on grounds of indiscipline and breaking party norms by openly criticising each other.

The decision was endorsed by the Central Committee at its meeting in June.

The Polit Bureau would also take stock of the overall political situation besides giving final touches to a nation-wide campaign later this this month to raise "people's issues" like price rise, farmers' problems and unemployment in renewed efforts to put pressure on the UPA government.
