Come July and travelling woes of commuters between Borivili and Virar would reduce . On completion of the much-touted quadrupling of tracks between Borivili-Virar, Western Railway (WR) expects to schedule 20 new services in this section after testing the two new tracks for mail expresses.
“We cannot open newly laid tracks immediately for passenger operations. We will first operate mail expresses following which the commissioner of railway safety (CRS) will examine the tracks on July 3 and 4. Once he approves it, regular suburban services will be made operational,” informed Satya Prakash, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of WR.
“Even if we start suburban services by July, there will be speed restrictions to ensure passenger safety” added Prakash. There would be seven services between Andheri-Virar, five between Bandra-Virar, four between Borivili-Virar, and two services each between Churchgate-Virar and Andheri-Vasai.
Also, the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) at Chennai is ready with the new prototype rake to be operational on the suburban tracks. “AK Jhingron general manager of WR will visit Chennai on Wednesday for final inspection of the train, which has been manufactured by Siemens. After the train is checked on AC traction in Chennai it would reach Mumbai in another fortnight,” informed Prakash.
“In Mumbai it would again be checked for a fortnight followed by certification from CRS, which will be available within a month. By September end the new rake will be available for commuter travel. Also during this time the railways would start getting new rakes as per the Mumbai Urban Transport Project,” he said.
