BANGALORE: As the tech industry continues to find new graduates unsuitable for employment, IBM has taken the plunge to team up with a few top B-schools to design a course that will make them job-ready.

In a tie-up between IBM and Indian School of Business-Hyderabad, Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore, National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad (NID), SP Jain Institute of Management in Mumbai (SPJIM) and Nirma Institute of Management (NIM) in Ahmedabad have teamed to build a course to bridge the skill gap between the academia and the IT, ITES and BPO industry.

“All the programmes in the course called ‘Service Science, Management and Engineering’ (SSME), will be launched in a year’s time,” said Guruduth Banavar, the associate director of IBM India Research Lab.

The course will be designed on the lines of programmes at University of California, Berkeley, Arizona State University and North Carolina State University and other Universities in the US.

These programmes drawn on research and teaching fields in computer science, computer engineering, business strategy and management sciences are said to help students in developing skills required in technology and services-based economy in the country.

“The new academic initiative is designed to prepare graduate students for careers in the evolving multi-disciplinary fields of services management,” said C Mohan, chief scientist of IBM, India.

Also to create a talent base for the IT industry, IBM has tied up with 740 engineering colleges to help students develop skills on using latest tools and technologies.

“Workshops and seminars are conducted to create awareness on the latest developments and needs of the industry and discussions are being held with every University to coin a curriculum to build those skills,” Banavar told DNA.
