Two cows were found in serious condition in a cowshed owned by the Shri Gyaneshwar Math Trust near Shiv Temple Road. The trust runs temples and cowsheds in the Dombivili area.
“At around 10 pm, I received a distress call from residents living near the cowshed,” said Nilesh Bhanage, PAWS general secretary. “One cow had delivered a calf prematurely on Sunday. It had a prolapsed uterus, and was in urgent need of surgery. Another cow was writhing in pain, as it was paralysed and couldn’t stand.” An inspection of the cowshed revealed about 35 animals with signs of neglect.
“There was no water for the cows, the floor was damaged, the drainage system was not working, and there was cowdung everywhere,” said Vishal Kantharia, a PAWS volunteer. “Many cows were coated in cowdung, and they were tied to a very small leash, limiting movement.”
After an hour of protests led by locals, Bajrang Dal activists and animal volunteers, at 3 am, a complaint was lodged against the trust at the Ram Nagar police station. “We are following the case, and action will be taken against the offenders,” said the police.
At around 5 am on Tuesday, the two cows were transferred to BSPCA Hospital at Parel. “The cows had obviously been ill-treated,” confirmed Diana Singh Roy, BSPCA executive committee member. “One died immediately after hospitalisation, whereas the other had a serious fracture. It is so serious we cannot risk hoisting it using supports because its hind legs will not withstand pressure.”
PAWS volunteers are determined to fight for animal rights.
“I have written strong letters to the trust, the Animal Husbandry Department at Mulund and the Animal Welfare Board,” said Bhanage.
