Padma Bhushan stolen on train

LUCKNOW: The Padma Bhushan 2008 conferred on Hindi litterateur Shrilal Shukla was stolen from the baggage of a Rashtrapati Bhavan official who was bringing the medal on a train to deliver it to the 83-year-old ailing writer here a week ago.

The theft on the Farrakka Express is reported to have occurred at Panki railway station near Kanpur a week ago, but the police probe has yet to begin with the Government Railway Police of Etawah and Kanpur passing the buck to each other on where the incident took place.

Shukla, famous for the novel 'Raag Darbari' which became a TV hit comedy serial in the 1990s, was unable to attend the award ceremony in Delhi on May 5 due to ill health and the official, Review Officer Uma Pathak, was to hand over the medal to him at his residence here.

Pathak, a Local Commissioner (New Delhi), boarded the train on May 26 with the award which was stolen on way to Lucknow, officials said here.

The said when Pathak woke up in Lucknow the next morning she did not find her the bag with her.

GRP officials in the state capital transferred the case to Kanpur after Pathak claimed the bag containing the award was stolen near Panki.

"The case of the theft was registered in Kanpur," Lucknow GRP Superintendent of Police Neera Rawat said on Tuesday.

A case under Section 379 (theft) of IPC was registered with GRP station at Kanpur Central railway station, but the inquiry got stuck as some officials claimed the place of crime was near Phaphund railway station under Etawah section.

The probe, according to GRP officials in Kanpur was transferred to Etawah though its GRP Inspector Arvind Kumar said he has no knowleged of it being handed over to him.

"I came to know that probe was handed over to me from the rports to media.I have no official information yet in this regard. IF the complaint is registered in Kanpur, they should start the probe", Kumar said.

When contacted, Inspector-General (Law and Order) B P Singh said he will look into the matter.
