Central intel report says Modi's security 'among the best', but IIM, ISRO and city malls vulnerable to attacks

AHMEDABAD: A central intelligence input, which chief minister Narendra Modi recently likened to weather reports, has termed Modi's security among the best. The intelligence assessment has put IIM, ISRO and the city's malls high on the terror hit-list.

The central agencies have shared the four-page intelligence report, issued in the wake of the serial bomb blasts in Jaipur, with the Ahmedabad police authorities.

"With his convoy moving at 120 km/hr, Modi never faces the risk of a sniper attack anywhere on Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar route, except may be for at the Taj Residency Ummed circle where vehicles need to slow down. Threats from an IED attack on him, though not ruled out, are less because such attacks could be difficult to execute. Maintaining a road combing team that will watch out for IEDs on routes taken by the chief minister can minimise the threat to a large extent," says the report.

The note also alerts police about the presence of 45 Bangladeshis in the Karanj market area of city. All of whom are in the process of receiving validated documents proving Indian citizenship.

The intelligence report maintained that Modi's 'Z+'security arrangements were among the best despite the high threat to his life from terrorist outfits.

A team of the Gujarat police's commando force currently takes care of the CM's security and is learnt to have procured latest equipment, like mobile and radio signal jammers, to ward off a radio controlled IED blast, hi-tech metal detectors and high frequency radio sets.

The report observes that Gujarat acts as a buffer state for extremist groups, active in India, for landing their weapons and trained personnel into the country. The report says the IIM and ISRO campus, with their minimal security and easy accessibility, could be the next destinations for a terror hold-up situation. The choked access routes of Kalupur and Gita Mandir could be ideal for an IED blast, it adds.

"These two institutions are highly vulnerable to terror attacks and are ideal for a hold-up kind of situation. The Kalupur railway station, Gita Mandir and city's malls are other vulnerable points for terror attacks. All three places are ideal for an IED (improvised explosive device) blast," said a joint director of central intelligence here.

Intelligence agencies have also taken into account a situation where communal riots break out in various locations across the state simultaneously.

"There have been recent incidents of communal riots reported from Surat, Ankleshwar, Vadodara and Ahmedabad. In all these incidents the trigger was something as minor as a wrongly parked car. All such incidents are being viewed as a possible precursor to terror attacks," said a central intelligence officer here.
