PATNA: Bihar minister for Transport Ramanand Prasad Singh resigned  on Saturday after disclosure of his being chargesheeted in a corruption case.

Singh went to the official residence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and submitted his resignation, a senior official at the CM's house confirmed.

Chief Minister forwarded his resignation to Governor R S Gavai who accepted it, he said.

Singh was chargesheeted by the state Vigilance Bureau on May 24, 1990 in a case accusing him of being involved in the purchase of a pipe of inferior quality when he was posted as Fuel Technologist at Kanti Thermal Power Station in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district, before switching over to politics.

Vigilance sources confirmed that its officials had raided Singh's official quarter at Kanti Thermal Power Station and seized jwellery worth thousands of rupees.

After the raid, the state Vigilance Bureau submitted a chargesheet against him in a special court here on December 11 1991.

A Special Vigilance court had on April 24, issued summon asking Singh to appear before it. But the latter's counsel pleaded his client's pre-occupation and the case was adjourned.

The matter came to the notice of chief minister on Friday and it was believed that Kumar asked him to put in his papers, official sources said.

When contacted Singh said that the case was "stage- managed and politically motivated" as his political opponents were behind it.

"I have been falsely implicated in this case and the charges against me will not stand," he said alleging that the erstwhile government led by Lalu Prasad had prevailed upon the state Vigilance Bureau to name him in this case.

The trial in this case is on.
