Fresh violence in Nandigram, two injured in clashes

NANDIGRAM (WB): Fresh violence broke out on Monday in West Bengal's embattled Nandigram between supporters of the Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC), which is opposing land acquisition for industrialisation, and activists of the ruling CPI-M.
 
Sources said both sides exchanged fire and hurled bombs at each other at a new area in Nandigram, where two BUPC members were injured.
      
Superintendent of Police S Panda said violence was reported from Satengabari and Jambari area in Nandigram Block II on Monday. CPI-M and BUPC supporters exchanged fire and hurled bombs at each other, Panda said.
      
Two BUPC members Gopal Gayen and Utpal Mandal were injured when BUPC and CPI-M activists clashed at Gokulnagar here last night. They have been admitted in Nandigram Hospital with splinter injuries.
 
Around 500 people have taken shelter in two relief camps at Nandigram Block I and Maheshpur in the wake of fresh violence after a brief lull in the run up to the panchayat polls slated for May 11.
