In what seems like the act of a jilted lover, 19-year-old Piyusa Alphanso was stabbed by her ex-boyfriend on Monday morning at Nayagaon in Borivili (west). Joseph Almeida, 24, who works as a taxi driver in Goa, attacked Alphanso with a knife when she rejected his marriage proposal for another man.

According to police officials, Alphanso befriended Almeida during a holiday trip to Goa around two years ago. Soon she shifted to Goa and started to live with Joseph, who did not have a steady job.

“Alphanso regularly visited her mother Jenny in Mumbai. But she wasn’t very happy with Joseph’s job as a cabdriver ,” said senior inspector Krishnaji Gaikwad.

“Two months ago she met Joseph’s relative Philip Almeida, 27, who had returned from Dubai where he worked in a private firm. The two started to like each other and Alphanso decided to break up with Joseph,” he said.

On Sunday night Alphanso and Philip came to Mumbai to tell her mother about their decision to get married. Joseph, however, decided to follow the duo. “After a heated argument and Alphanso’s refusal to come back to him, Joseph removed the knife which he had hid in his socks and attacked her,” Gaikwad said.

Hearing the commotion, Philip intervened and hurt his hand. Alphanso suffered deeps cuts on her hand and thigh and was rushed to a hospital.

With the help of Alphanso and Philip, police officials have made a sketch of Joseph, who is currently absconding.  “I have known him for over two years, but I never thought he would go to such extremity,” said Alphanso, who is currently recuperating at Karuna hospital.
