MUMBAI: Barring the few odd people in the stands, there was hardly any enthusiast who thronged the Mumbai Hockey Association (MHA) ground for the 46th Bombay Gold Cup hockey final between Army XI and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited on Friday, which the armymen won 2-1 rallying from behind.

Outside the stadium, it was crowded. Not with hockey enthusiasts, but with cricket fans. Just adjacent to the MHA is the Wankhede Stadium where the Mumbai Indians, with the likes of names like Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya and Shaun Pollock to name a few, were about to start their practice session.

But it can be said with conviction that those who came to watch hockey must have returned home happy, as it was close battle with both sides giving a spirited show.

It was BPCL who took the lead in the 12th minute after Amar Aiyamma converted following a penalty corner. It was a wake-up call for the armymen, who slowly used the weapons in their armoury to hit back with goals in the 43rd and 68th minutes. Renel Singh restored parity while Sunil Ekka banged home the killer punch. Renel’s was a penalty corner conversion after a slight deflection and Ekka sounded the board from a melee two minutes from the final whistle.

Meanwhile, apart from the glittering Bombay Gold Cup, the winners were richer by Rs 1.25 lakh, with the runner-ups taking home Rs 75,000.

Under the scorching sun, both teams found it difficult to maintain the speed. The heat particularly took a hard toll on BPCL right-half SS Gill, who fainted and had to be
taken to a local hospital.
