India’s celebrated educational institutes surely seem to be going places.
After setting up campuses in West Asia, educational institutes like Birla Insitute of Technology (BITS), Pilani, and Manipal University are heading for south-east countries like Singapore and Malaysia.

The institutes are being lured by the presence of large number of Indian expatriates in these countries. “Gulf and southeast regions have a huge Indian and Asian population,” Anand Sudarshan, managing director and chief executive officer of Manipal Education, said.

“There is a great demand for Indian higher educational institutes. Most people prefer their children to study in these institutes, which are known for their quality of education,” he said.

Manipal University, which has established campuses in Dubai and Malaysia, is now eyeing United Kingdom as the next destination.

SP Jain Institute of Management and Research set up its campus in Singapore in September 2007 on the invitation of the Education Development Board of Singapore. The institute has a campus in Dubai also.

“Most of our students (in Dubai and SIngapore) are from India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. We are the first Indian institute to be granted university status in Singapore,” Nitish Jain, president, SP Jain Institute, said.

The institute offers full-time global management programme where students undergo training at the Dubai and Singapore campuses for six months each.

BITS, Pilani, which set up its campus in Dubai in 2000, has also received several offers from the governments of Singapore and Mauritius. “We were approached by the governments of Mauritius and Singapore to set up a campus in the two countries. However, after Dubai, we are now concentrating on our new Hyderabad campus. The high quality of education provided by us is the reason countries abroad are opening their doors for us,” professor LK Maheshwari, vice-chancellor, BITS, said.

Another reason why these top institutes are venturing abroad is the pro-active steps taken by several countries. “Many countries, Dubai in particular, have started programmes to invite foreign educational institutions to set up campuses,” Sudarshan
from Manipal Education said.
