NEW DELHI: House No. 234 A of Rajnagar-II in the capital's southwestern corner was locked on Saturday morning. Three of its four occupants were dead of stab wounds. The fourth, a prime suspect in the murders, was in hospital.

Vinod Verma, a driver at the Hungarian embassy, his wife Pushpa and their daughter-in-law Jyoti were killed in their house late on Friday.

The police say the adopted son of the deceased couple is suspected to be behind the killings.

"When we came to the house at around 3 a.m. the door was open and there was blood on the stairs. Verma's body was lying in a pool of blood on the ground floor while the two ladies were on the first floor," a police official on the crime scene said.

The police suspected that the same weapon was used to kill all of them.

The only surviving member of the family, Verma's son Nitin, claimed he wasn't present in the house when the incident occurred.

"Nitin has told the police that he met with an accident near Dhaula Kuan Friday night and returned home only to find the three dead," the official added.

He was in Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital from where he was referred to Safdarjung Hospital. Nitin, who works at a call centre, was stated to have sustained injuries on his hands.

However, the police were sceptical about his version as Nitin's motorcycle did not have any signs of an accident and his injuries were superficial. The police took the two-wheeler away for examination.

The police added that Nitin had not called them when he reportedly found his parents and wife dead. He called a neighbour from a phone booth instead. The neighbour called the police.

The incident came as a shock to Verma's relatives.

"We did not know that Nitin was adopted by the family. It seems to be the handiwork of Nitin," Jyoti's uncle Ved Prakash alleged. "Her body has been sliced into three parts. She was brutally stabbed at neck and below waist," he added with tears welling in his eyes.

Jyoti had married Nitin Jan 24 last year. She used to teach at the Sir Chotu Ram School in Palam and gave private tuitions.

The family had come to reside in the colony around two years back.

"We did not know about the incident. It was only through television that we got to know about it," a neighbour said from inside her house, illustrating the increasing aloofness in Delhi's neighbourhoods.

Asked if they did not hear the cries of the three who were killed, the neighbours said they were sleeping and that a religious ceremony was going on in the nearby lane, which would have made the cries inaudible.

But the murders did pierce the aloofness. From Saturday morning, neighbours were standing in the lane and talking about the incident in disbelief.

"There was a havan (religious ceremony) scheduled today (Saturday) at Verma's house as they had just built the room at the first floor," one neighbour said.
