SRINAGAR: Unfazed by the currency controversy, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) patron and former chief minister Mufti Mohd Sayeed has set another balloon in the air demanding free and fearless return for people who have crossed into Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) for arms training and rehabilitation of the kin of militants killed by the security forces.

“There are people across the line of control who want to come back. They should be given free passage as per the recommendations of one of the working groups set up by the prime minister after the round-table conference,” Mufti said.

Interestingly, a few years ago the PDP had voted against a resolution in the legislative assembly by CPI(M) member Mohd Yousuf Tarigami seeking free passage to people who had crossed into PoK for arms training. Mufti, who was the Union home minister when militancy began in 1990, also said, “Families and dependents of militants should be rehabilitated and given jobs.”

The statements come just two days after Mufti proposed dual currency in Jammu and Kashmir, triggering a political storm. “Both Indian and Pakistani currencies should be allowed in J&K. In Europe, there is no visa restriction and people are free to move between different countries. J&K can become a model for that,” he said.

A political storm is brewing. State BJP president Ashok Khujaria hit hard at the Congress-PDP government demanding its dismissal and implementation of governor’s rule. “We hold the Congress wholly and solely responsible for these anti-national remarks. Our demand is both Mufti and his daughter Mehbooba be tried for sedition and the coalition government dismissed,” he said.

Omar Abdullah, president of the National Conference, accused Mufti of copying ideas to remain politically relevant. “The suggestions are already part of the working group recommendations, Muftisahib is copying them to his advantage.”
