HIMACHAL PRADESH: In an apparent case of road rage, a 24-year-old fighter pilot of the Indian Air Force (IAF) was stabbed to death allegedly by a lawyer near this cantonment town.
Flight Lieutenant Anubhav Rao from the Ambala Air Force Base was stabbed several times on Friday evening by local lawyer Hari Dass Tanwar after an altercation, according to police.
Rao, who hailed from Hissar town in Haryana, was accompanied by three other friends from Delhi. They had gone to Shimla for some work and decided to spend the night here on their way back Friday. But on the road to Kasauli, they exchanged words with Tanwar over allowing their vehicle to overtake him.
Solan Additional Superintendent of Police S.R. Rana said both sides chased each other for some kilometres before they got down and had a fight. Tanwar took out a sharp edged weapon and stabbed Rao and his friend Sameer Yadav.
Rao was rushed to the military hospital here from where he was referred to the Chandimandir Western Command hospital near Chandigarh. Rao was declared brought dead by the hospital authorities there.
Solan district police later arrested Tanwar from his village in Himachal's Doon valley. He has been charged with murder.
Police officials said that Tanwar was drunk when he attacked Rao and his three friends near Mashobara village on the outskirts of Kasauli town on the road to Jagnesu. Tanwar was travelling with his family when the incident occurred.
Rao's shaken parents in Hissar said their son was a budding fighter pilot. "Had his life been sacrificed in combat, our suffering would have been much less," his mother said.
