How many times have you been stuck at the airport due to a delayed flight, and wished you owned a private plane? Now that dream could soon become a reality.

Private charter operators (PCOs) will be starting their operations from non-metros like Indore, Ahmedabad and Nashik, thereby reducing the current fares by almost 50 per cent. So you will no longer have to cough up lakhs of rupees to hire a charter plane.

“We have started services from Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Nagpur and Indore and for those who live in these places, it is convenient and affordable,” says Captain Yashraj Tongia, chief flying instructor, Yash Air, which recently started One Sky, a private charter service.

Earlier, for instance, if anybody wanted to hire a charter plane in India, then he had to get in touch with operators who function from Mumbai or Delhi. The empty aircraft would come to pick you and drop you at your destination.

It would go back to its base in either Mumbai or Delhi and then again come to pick you and take you back to your home town.  As the aircraft flew to and fro to its headquarters, it had to levy heavy aircraft position charges that are added to your fare.  “While operating from these mini-metros, these charges are reduced. And the customer just has to pay for his travelling,” says Tongia.

Thus, if a charter service, for example, from Jaipur to Delhi would cost you Rs1.2 to Rs1.5 lakhs earlier, it would now cost you only around Rs60,000 to Rs70,000.  “The parking charges are very less in these mini-metros and the air traffic rules are relaxed, unlike in Mumbai,” says Tongia.

For instance, the Ojhar airbase in Nashik has reduced its charges of Rs6,000 per landing to Rs50 to encourage PCOs to use their airbase. Cashing on this trend, Marsman Limited is soon going to start its operations from Nashik and Juhu.

They will operate flights from Nashik to all places like Solapur, Kolhapur, Indore, Bhopal, Dhule, Aurangabad and other small towns.  “The flight will be operated at a very nominal cost, which will be affordable for common people,” said TM Verma, CEO, Marsman Ltd.

“Thus, three passengers could travel from Nashik to Juhu for around Rs10,000 to 12,000.  The PCO has bought one Cessna 172 and will be soon acquiring three more aircrafts,” said Captain Mihir Bhagwati, director, My Planes, who is helping Marsman procure the aircrafts.
