MUMBAI/ NEW DELHI: A young army officer from Mumbai has reportedly gone missing from New Delhi in mysterious circumstances. A missing person complaint has been filed with the Delhi Police at the New Delhi railway station.

Abhishek Nayak, 25, a resident of Kandivli and a lieutenant in the 10 Sikh Light Infantry, arrived at New Delhi railway station on Sunday morning but disappeared later that day. He was on his way to Bhatinda in Punjab to join his regiment.

Abhishek had joined the army in September 2007. He had come to Mumbai for a two-week holiday. He is unmarried.

On Saturday, Abhishek left for Delhi by the Rajdhani Express. Around 9am on Sunday he called home from his cell phone and said he had reached New Delhi. He was to take the Intercity Express at 1pm to Bhatinda, from where an army vehicle was to pick him up.

But late that evening the Nayaks were stunned to receive a call from Bhatinda asking why Abhishek had not reached the place.

His younger brother Ashirwad said, “After getting the call, we tried to contact him on his mobile phone, but it was switched off.”

Abhishek’s father, Rameshwar Nayak, a retired lieutenant colonel, left for Delhi the next day to find out what had happened. He reached the capital on Tuesday and filed the complaint. But he said the police were not being very cooperative.

“It’s difficult for me to figure out what happened to my son,” Nayak said. “The police should take this matter more seriously.”

The police, however, denied they were taking the matter lightly. “We have flashed a message to all railway stations and adjoining states about the missing officer,” a senior officer, who did not want to be identified, said.

The officer said police have scanned the CCTV footage of the cloakroom at New Delhi station and details of the train in which Abhishek travelled to the capital. From the footage, they have learnt that Nayak deposited his luggage around 9:47am and then called his unit in Bhatinda to ask for a vehicle to pick him up in the evening.

From his cell phone records, police found that the soldier spoke to a friend in Mumbai at around 11:30pm from somewhere in Connaught Place. Thereafter, his phone was switched off.

Since the matter relates to an army officer, military intelligence has also been informed and is making its own inquiries. The unspoken fear is that his identify card could be misused by anti-social elements to penetrate the army.
