NEW DELHI: With the Tamil film industry gearing up to do its bit in the ongoing tussle between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over the Hogenakkal issue by holding a fast on Friday, the guessing game has started again over the participation of superstar Rajinikanth in the stir.

The South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce (SIFCC), spearheading the agitation, has asked all the artistes to take part in the fast organised to protest the attacks on cinemas screening Tamil movies in Bangalore and Karnataka's stand on the Hogenakkal Integrated Water Project.

There was no word on whether Rajinikanth, a Maharashtrian of Karnataka origin, would participate in the agitation against the attacks on Tamils in Karnataka. He did not participate in a similar protest organised by the film industry in 2002 on Cauvery.

"The fast will begin at 0800 hrs in the morning on Friday and will continue till 0600 hrs in the evening. All the actors, technicians and others related with the Tamil film industry have been asked to participate in it," Film Chamber chairman K R Gangadharan said.

Asked whether actors of Karnataka origin will participate in the protest, he said, "It is not a question of being a Kannadiga or origin of other state.... Whoever associated with the Tamil film industry, irrespective of their origin, should participate in the fast."

He added that all technicians and artists of Tamil industry who are of Karnataka origin must also participate in the protest, failure of which would lead to non-cooperation from the industry.

Sources in the South Indian Film Artistes Associations said that it has been conveyed to Rajinikanth that he should join the fast on Friday, but no one is certain about this participation.

However, Gangadharan refused to comment when asked whether Rajinikanth will participate in the fast.

"All Tamil actors have been asked to join the fast.... Rajinikanth is also a Tamil actor."

The superstar had earlier given a slip to the Neyveli rally organised by South Indian Film Artistes Associations alleging "discrimination" by Karnataka on the Cauvery issue.

But, the next day Rajinikanth had conducted his own fast in style, near Marina beach here under the full glare of television cameras.

Rajnikanth, at that time lashed out at his colleagues in the industry by saying what their protests could achieve when the Cauvery issue could not be solved even by the Supreme Court, the Prime Minister and two Chief Ministers.

Arjun, Prakash Raj, Murali, Prabhu Deva and his brother Raju Sundaram, all from Karnataka, are expected to take part in the fast.
