WASHINGTON: Vowing to 'fight for every job' shipped out of US, Democrat presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton has said that her government would create millions of employment opportunities "that can't be outsourced" if she comes to power.
"I will fight for every single job in America, we can't save them all, but were going to save a lot more of them than we have been lately," Clinton said at the annual convention of the AFL-CIO at Philadelphia.
"Then were going to create millions of new, high paying jobs that cant be outsourced," the New York Senator, who is fighting the political battle against Illinois Senator Barack Obama for the Democratic Party nomination this August, said.
Criticising President George W Bush for "standing by" and "watching" as "we have lost three million manufacturing jobs since he became president", Clinton said he was "doing nothing about the loopholes in our tax code that actually encourage companies to ship jobs overseas".
Promising to be the "strongest, toughest and most determined person" to be "bargaining" for Americans in respect of outsourcing jobs, Clinton said: "I dont need to tell any of you this. No one knows better than organized labour how important it is to have a fighter on your side.
"When you send someone to the bargaining table, you need the strongest, toughest, most determined person you've got. Not someone who is just going to talk about problems. But someone who will roll up her sleeves and get the job done for you," she said.
Hillary said that if chosen, she will be a President "who gets up everyday and asks, 'What am I going to do for the American people today? What am I going to do to make sure youve got good jobs that cant be outsourced? What am I going to do to make sure we have trade agreements that are pro-American and pro-worker and make sure that we can compete with anybody, anywhere, anytime?'
"If you give me the chance, thats the kind of president I will be. That's what I'll do because that's what I've always done," the top Democrat leader said.
Hillary also targeted presumptive Republican nominee Senator McCain for "believing that business (was) as usual on trade is just fine.
"He says that some lost jobs 'are not coming back;' that seems fine with him too. Well, I think its time for a different approach," she said.
The New York lawmaker also made the point that she was "deeply concerned" of the outsourcing of production for essential defence material.
Referring to the case of a US company which was bought out, and whose production was shifted to China, Clinton said: "Not only did we lose jobs, we lost essential, valuable information because youre not going to tell me that the Chinese military doesnt have exactly what it takes to make those magnets.
"Now we are going to outsource our refueling tankers. Heres what I would do as president; I would strengthen our national defence that support both our men and women in uniform and American workers, and prevent the exporting of essential knowledge that keeps us safe and enables us to have the greatest military in the world," Clinton added.
