They will protest the pay panel recommendations in Delhi on April 14

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab IPS officers association has joined the all-India IPS officers’ association to register a protest against the recommendations made by the sixth pay commission. Amid widespread resentment, some of the state’s IPS officers have agreed to join the protest march slated to take place in Delhi on April 14.

In a communication to the Union home ministry, the association has termed the recommendations as “retrograde for the members of our service” and their implementation would only bring about “sharper accentuation of the colonial legacy”.
The secretary of the association observed that IPS officers in Punjab, who had waged a determined fight against militancy and suffered huge losses, felt “deeply de-motivated” to see “glaringly iniquitous treatment” meted out to them.

The association regretted the commission had sought to place the IAS officers on an unduly higher pedestal without realising that the job of maintaining internal security was crucial for peace and development.

Making a case for equal treatment with their IAS counterparts, the association highlighted in its memorandum how a large number of IPS officers had “made supreme sacrifices for the cause of national security”.

Punjab alone lost two illustrious IPS officers in the rank of DIG and another in the rank of SSP to terrorists’ bullets.

The association said it would be unfortunate if an IPS officer and his IAS counterpart would have a pay
difference of nearly Rs16,000 when they begin their career.

The memorandum pointed out that after 30 years of service, going by the recommendations of the commission, an IPS officer would be earning nearly Rs70 lakh less than his IAS counterpart.
