Congress gen secy is handpicking cadre aged 28-34 to strengthen youth wings

MUMBAI: Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi is building his own team of 300 young leaders to help him strengthen the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and the Youth Congress, both youth wings of the Congress.

A party source said Gandhi and members of his core team have been meeting Congress workers in the age group of 28-34 years. The plan, the source said, is to set up a network of young leaders. Each selected member would be given charge of the frontal organisations in two districts. The Congress has 600 district committees across the country.

Gandhi met some of the aspirants recently at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi. Youth Congress workers from across the country went to the capital hoping to be among the Gandhi scion’s chosen few. The candidates went to the capital with their bio-data, proof of age, and work profile and presented themselves before a panel within the stipulated time. Family loyalists Jagdish Tytler, BK Hariprasad, Jitendra Singh, Jiten Prasada, Sachin Pilot, Ashok Tavor, and Pradeep Ratha helped Gandhi interview the candidates.

The candidates were asked various questions pertaining to their educational background, economic condition, business, reason for being in politics, and family history. The questioning was done mostly by members of the core team. Gandhi merely observed each candidate and listened attentively to their replies, asking an occasional question himself.

One such aspirant, Sandeep Singh, who went for an interview on March 3, said, “It was a great opportunity for me to sit with a member of the Gandhi family and share my work experience. We have faith in him and his vision, so it is a dream to be part of his team.” Jitendra Singh, a secretary in the All-India Congress Committee, however, told DNA the exercise was merely an attempt to meet office-bearers of the youth wings of the Congress and there was no immediate plan to form a “Rahul Gandhi team”.
