NEW DELHI: The war of words between BJP and Congress over who have done more for farmers escalated on Saturday with the saffron party saying the loan waiver announced by the UPA government was not beneficial to debt-ridden peasants, particularly in Vidarbha region.

L K Advani, the party's Prime Ministerial face, and BJP chief Rajnath Singh sought to puncture government claims that the Rs 60,000 crore waiver package will address the crisis-hit agrarian sector.

"This package is of no use to the farmers in the Vidarbha region who own three hectares of land and for those who have taken loan from private money lenders," the Leader of the Opposition said.

The package announced in the Union Budget proposes to write off the debt of farmers holding two hectres of land.

Raising questions over the timing of the package, Singh sought to blame the Congress for the crisis in the agrarian sector. "Those who have ruled the country for majority of the time have ruined the farm sector," he remarked.

Both the leaders were addressing a public meeting to mark the 65th birthday of late BJP leader Sahib Singh Verma at his ancestral village near here.

The BJP chief claimed that the previous NDA government had done more for the farmers than the UPA. Congress and BJP are engaged in a game of political one-upmanship to claim credit for helping the farming community.

Singh also criticised the Delhi Government for not constructing a memorial for Verma, a former Delhi Chief Minister, despite promising to build one.

"Eight months have passed and they could not even construct a memorial. We can well imagine what will happen to the promises they have given for farmers," he added.
