MUMBAI: Operations at the city airport were largely unaffected in the nationwide strike called by unions opposing privatisation and closure of some airports despite 2,000 staffers not reporting to work on Wednesday.

"There has been no significant effect on flight and airport operations," a spokesperson for Mumbai International Airport said here.

Officials at the critical Air Traffic Control have not joined the strike as they are not members of the union while the outsourced ground handling and housekeeping staff continued with their work.

In the event of shortage of staff for emergency services, personnel from Indian Air Force have been placed on standby, the spokesperson added.

An office-bearer from the Airport Authority Employees Joint Forum (AAEJF) said that the strike will be peaceful and the union members will not indulge in any protest marches or rallies.

Airport Authority Employees Union General Secretary Dilip Gujjar told PTI that the employees are resorting to the strike in "Gandhigiri" style.

About 200 workers are sitting outside the domestic airport here following the indefinite strike announced by the AAEJF from midnight following decision to close existing airports in Bangalore and Hyderabad and failure of talks with government on their demands.
