Six drown as picnic ends in tragedy

NAVI MUMBAI: Six executives of a Reliance Communications call centre including two women drowned while on a picnic at Shrivardhan in Raigad district. Five bodies have been fished out while a search is on for the sixth victim.

Fourteen employees from the Reliance Communications call centre located at DAKC in Koparkhairane hired a mini bus and left for the picnic on Sunday. They were scheduled to return on Monday evening. The incident occurred around 12.30 pm on Monday, Dighi police said.

According to an official from Reliance Communications, 12 of them entered the sea for a swim around noon. “Seven of them were swept away by a huge wave,” the official said, adding that while six met with a watery grave, the seventh person, identified as Manish Oke, survived. He has been admitted to a hospital in Dasoli.

The victims were identified as Manoj Parmar (35), Mamta Nahak (25), Naseer Sheikh (35), Neelkantha Iyer (26), Kingston Paul (30) and Noor Mansoori (25). A search has been launched for Mansoori. The victims were residents of Chembur, Ambernath, Mulund and Koparkhairane.

After receiving information about the accident, a team of Reliance officials including two doctors had rushed to the mishap site.
