BHUBANESHWAR: While a controversy has cropped up following the prime minister’s office’s (PMO) refusal to reveal the secret documents related to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, prompting the Central Information Commission (CIC) to issue a directive on the matter, there has been a demand from many in Orissa to hand over all such materials to Netaji’s museum located at his birthplace in Cuttack, about 35 km from here.

One of the censored documents, a letter to his brother, is on display here.

Samir Dey, member of Netaji Birth Place Museum Trust and a minister in the Naveen Patnaik government, said, “All documents relating to Netaji’s life should be handed over to the museum.”

The museum, an old two-storied L-shaped building  which has come up at the Netaji’s birth place, boasts of few rare documents and antiques of Netaji, beginning from his birth. The building, which was lying in a dilapidated state has been refurbished with the help of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage and converted into a museum in 2004.

The room on the first floor of the building where the hero was born has been preserved, and so are the toys with which he played. It has 22 original letters written by Netaji from Geneva, Milan, Shilong, Mandalay jail, Rangoon jail in Myanmar, Presidency jail, Alipore new central jail in Calcutta, and Berlin, to his parents and family members.

“Many rare photos and items used by Netaji in his childhood are here,” says assistant curator of the museum Arundhati Mishra. A family photo of his 14 brothers and sisters and his parents still hangs on the wall of Netaji’s room. The museum staff offer puja in Netaji’s room every day. The bed in which he was born has also been preserved.
