LONDON: A UK supermarket chain has come out with a novel idea to get rid of plastic packaging by turning them into clothes.

Sainsbury's will launch a collection of clothes made from recycled plastic, thrown out by stores or returned to recycling bins, such as soft drink bottles, fruit and vegetable packaging, and even meat trays.

The garments, to be manufactured in Europe, will be priced at a similar range as that of Sainsbury's Tu fashion range and will go on sale at the group's 500 stores later this year.

"We'll also be the first (supermarket) delivering a new product  from our own waste," Tu's marketing manager Josie Cartridge was quoted by the Guardian as saying.

Sainsbury's is also sponsoring a show, at London College of  Fashion, of futuristic textiles, including a 'disappearing' dress  of biodegradable material.
