MUMBAI: News of Bihar legislators asking the governor of their state RS Gavai, a senior leader of Republican Party of India who is a Maharashtrian to go back has not gone down well with RPI workers in Maharashtra.

They demanded action against the legislators responsible for the verbal attack on Gavai when he was about to address the state assembly.

However, Gavai’s family members have requested their party members and other Dalit leaders to remain calm. “We do not want RPI people to come out on the streets like other party workers. We appeal to all to put an end to  this controversy and maintain peace in Maharashtra,” said Rajendra Gavai, son of the Bihar governor who is also national secretary of RPI.

Rajendra says that the controversy is unnecessary as  both the Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and opposition leader Rabri Devi have reposed confidence in his father. “Over 90 percent of legislators are in support of my father,” said  Rajendra.

Rajendra said that his father believes in the Constitution and in the rights of  every citizen to work in any city for a living.
