MUMBAI: A metropolitan magistrate on Saturday directed the Bandra police to conduct an enquiry into the allegations of an “illegal marriage” made against actor Sanjay Dutt and his new bride Maanyata by her alleged husband. The court directed the police to submit a report to the court after probing the allegations till February 20.

Meraj-ur-Rehman Sheikh moved an application before the court on Friday alleging that he married Maanyata in 2003 and since their marriage was not annulled, Maanyata’s matrimony with the Munnabhai star was illegal. He therefore sought the arrest of the newly-wed Dutt couple.

Sheikh, who was produced before the metropolitan magistrate’s court in Bandra on Saturday, said his brother-in-law Naved Sheikh was a witness to his marriage with Maanyata and that he also had a Nikahnama in his house in Hyderabad. He, however, told the court that Naved lives in Dubai. “It was a love marriage and there was no other witness to it.

All my family members live in Dubai,” Sheikh told the court. Since the witness named by Sheikh was outside its jurisdiction, the court directed the Bandra Police to inquire into the allegations.

Sheikh is at present lodged in the Arthur Road Jail as he was arrested five months back for allegedly sending obscene sms-es to Bollywood actors like Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor, Neha Dhupia and Kangana Ranaut.

Earlier in the day, Shashikant Bhat, the police officer investigating the charges against Sheikh was questioned before the court. He told the court that their investigations revealed that Sheikh had sent a sms to Maanyata. He added that the mobile phone recovered from Sheikh contained text messages sent to Maanyata’s number.
Sheikh, however, pleaded before the court that he was being falsely implicated in the case.

What struck as a rare instance in court proceedings, Sheikh, an accused, asked the investigating officer why he was being accused in the case. “Kya yeh sab Maanyata ne karvaya hai? (Has Maanyata planted all this?),” he said dramatically.

Clad in a blue t-shirt and a beige jacket, Sheikh appeared to be restless, verbose and dramatic, much to the annoyance of the magistrate Pankaj Shah. He was repeatedly told to speak only when asked and to answer the court’s questions in brief. The proceedings in the case will continue after the police submits its report to the court on February 20.
