PEBBLE BEACH: Daniel Chopra missed the recent Indian Masters in favour of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, and he does not regret the decision.

The Indian Masters was the first ever European Tour event in India and saw caddie-turned-golfer S S P Chowrasia upstaged a host of big names, both local and international, to claim the coveted prize.

Chopra, who honed his skills at the Delhi Golf Club before moving in search of greener pastures, was conspicuous by his absence when the layout hosted the prestigious event. Incidentally, he had won the Indian Masters way back in 1994.

Chopra, who holds a Swedish passport, was born in the north European country, but raised by his grandparents in India. The call of Pebble Beach, one of the holiest shrines in golf, was too much to resist. “This is my favourite event on the PGA Tour,” Chopra said. “I loved it the first time I came here. I don’t think I’ll ever miss this event. They can write me down for life.”

Chopra’s love for the tournament did not help him on the golf course, as he missed the cut after two rounds of 75. So enamoured is Chopra with the place that he is looking to purchase some real estate in the area on California’s Pacific coast.

“I’ve won twice in the last three months. I’m sure the mortgage brokers will be happy to see me coming.”
