LeT militant names Pak-based terrorist Abu Hamza

BANGALORE: The identity of the mystery man, who pulled the trigger on Delhi University professor MC Puri on December 28, 2005, at Indian Institute of Science (IISc), has finally been revealed.

Abu Hamza, a Pakistan-based terrorist's name was revealed by Mohammed Ghouse alias Naser Riyazuddin, another Lashkar-e-Toiba militant from the neighbouring country, during narco-analysis on Saturday. He was arrested by Davangere police on January 25 this year.

With this information, the Bangalore police have obtained a major lead in the IISc case. Also, out of the six militants arrested by central security agencies and the Uttar Pradesh police in connection with terror strikes on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp in Rampur on January 1 this year, suspected mastermind Sallahuddin had a part to play in the IISc attack according to the information sent by the UP police.

“Sallahuddin, who has six fake names, will be brought to Bangalore and interrogated after the UP police are done with their questioning,” said director-general of police (corps of detectives) Ajay Kumar Singh.

Meanwhile, Hamza is suspected to be in Pakistan. “During the narco-analysis test, Naser said he had met Abu Hamza in Pakistan during his training. Hamza told Naser that he was the one who shot professor Puri on that night in December,” said Singh, who was police commissioner of Bangalore when the attack took place. Hamza is the only outsider (Pakistani) in the group that carried out the attack, said the police.

A sketch of Hamza has been prepared on the description given by Naser. However, it will be clarified by Sallaludin from Madhubani in Bihar. “We know of two names who were involved. But Naser is not involved. Shahid Bilal could have helped the shooter in the IISc case. But that will be clarified by Sallaludin's interrogation,” Singh said. Bilal, a Harkat-ul-Jihad-Isalmi militant, was assumed to be the mastermind of the shootout so far.

The police had discovered three modules then from Kolar, Bijapur and Gulbarga then.
