The basic purpose behind running his company was to engage unskilled, physically handicapped people and train them to become self-reliant, said Baldev Chawla, the proprietor of Sai Fibers.
“We do not have any training centre in the company and employees learn by watching others working,” 46-year-old Chawla said. Chawla claimed that the quality and design of the products produced by his employees were as good as those manufactured by MNCs.
Started with a capital of Rs5000, the company has registered a turnover between Rs20 to 25 lakh, Chawla said. However, the company is not getting enough support either from the Jharkhand government or big industrial houses.
Established in September 2001, the company produces dustbins, traffic safety articles, portable toilets, telephone booths at the Adityapur Industrial Estate in adjoining Saraikela-Kharswan district.
In 2000, the then Speaker of Jharkhand assembly Inder Singh Namdhari had asked Chawla to produce 40 statues of Birsa Munda in two days for the foundation day celebrations.
Chawla procured the order and the employees worked round- the-clock to meet the deadline. Namdhari was impressed with the work and recommended the allotment of land at the Adityapur Industrial Estate as requested by Chawla for his company.
The first physically handicapped person engaged by him was a beggar, Ganesh Kalindi, who lost both his legs and used to beg before Ram Mandir in Bistupur.
