Omar Laden and his wife are on a mission to promote world peace

LONDON: Dressed in matching short black leather jackets, tight jeans, black T-shirts and long flowing raven hair, they strolled around Rome holding hands. The couple’s father would neither approve of their appearance nor their behaviour. They are Mr and Mrs Bin Laden — Osama’s son Omar and his British wife Jane Felix-Browne.

The odd couple stole international headlines last year when it was discovered that the son of the ‘most wanted’ in the world had married a British grandmother after a whirlwind romance at the Pyramids in Egypt. Since then, Omar has divorced his first wife Najwa with whom he was living and had a child, so as to abide by British law that doesn’t allow polygamy. Omar, 27, and Jane, 52, have applied for a marriage visa to enable them to settle in the Cheshire village of Moulton in Britain.

Waiting for the visa to come through, Omar and Jane are on their self-proclaimed mission to promote world peace. After having their photographs taken at Rome’s tourist attractions, the couple was interviewed on Italian television about their role as ‘peace ambassadors’. “I do not believe my father is dead, otherwise I would have known it — the world would have known it,” Omar said of Osama. He claims he has not seen Osama before 9/11. Omar would like to meet Pope Benedict XVI but understands “that it is not easy” to get an audience.

The trip to Italy is their first to Europe together in the ‘mission for peace’. “We want to stop the bombings everywhere in the world and the fighting on every side and to think to find a new solution,” said Omar, who as a child lived in exile in Sudan and Afghanistan with his father.

“This is the message he has been spreading. He’s an ambassador for peace — we both are,” said Jane, a former parish councillor who has been married five times before. “If we can save one civilian life through what we are doing, it will be worth it,” she added. The couple plan to ride from Egypt to Morocco on horseback to raise awareness of their peace mission.
