It has been a Sachin Tendulkar of a winter in Mumbai this season. New milestones are being recorded almost on a daily basis, and more are on their way.

The minimum temperature on Tuesday fell by a good six degree over the previous day, registering the season’s lowest temperature -- as also on January 27, 2007 -- of 10.2C at Santacruz.

The weather bureau has forecast that Wednesday could register a minimum of 10C, which, if it does happen, will be the lowest since 1991 and the coldest-ever February day for 58 years.

And it is not only the minimum temperature that is taking a beating, the maximum is doing no better. A sharp dip was recorded in the maximum temperature in the city at 24C, which apparently is 7C below normal.

The bureau has forecast that the nip in the air will continue for another two days. The lowest temperature recorded in February was on February 10, 1950. And for the record (sic), January 22, 1962, was the coldest ever in Mumbai, registering 7.4C.

“The minimum temperature in the city is likely to be around 10C on February 6 and 11C on February 7,” said Dr CVV Bhadram, deputy director general of Regional Metrological Department, Mumbai.

“The city is going through another cold spell due to northerly winds in lower levels of the atmosphere,” he said. These are severe winter conditions as far as the city is concerned. The cold wave in the city is mainly due to the impact of the winter conditions in North India, Bhadram said.

“Very strong northerly winds and high incursion of cold winds have resulted in the drastic dip,” said K Sathidevi, director Regional Metrological Department, Mumbai.

The weather bureau had earlier predicted a dip in temperature after the cloud formation over the city on Sunday moved away.

If you want to feel any better, if not warmer, it is not just the city but also several other parts of the state as well as the country that are experiencing an extended winter.

Pune, Nashik, Nagpur and Aurangabad are some of the cities in Maharashtra experiencing a frosty weather.

Snowfall in North Indian states like Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh are also affecting the temperature in the city. Now, does that give -- for some -- one more reason to blame the North Indians!
