The Flinders Street is just a few meters away from the Melbourne Cricket Ground. It is one of the two most busy thoroughfares in the city, the Punt Street — also close to the MCG — being the other.

The Flinders Street railway station is the hub for city commuters. Buy a five-dollar ticket and you can travel across the city which has a radius of over 60km.

On Friday night, the Flinders Street was closed for vehicular movement causing some inconvenience to the people who turned up at the MCG. The city civic authorities issued an advisory to the public. They were asked to take a different route after the match.

But why? Is it to provide easy movement for the VVIPs attending the year’s first T20 match? “No. There will be a shoot for a television serial,” said a traffic sergeant, adding: “We never close a street to provide easy passage to anyone.” Some food for thought for traffic handlers in other parts of the world.
