NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh MP Atiq Ahmed was on Friday remanded to two days in police custody in the Raju Pal murder case.

Granting the transit remand, chief metropolitan magistrate Sanjeev Jain told UP police to produce him in an Allahabad court within two days. For now, though, the expelled Samajwadi Party member has been sent to Tihar jail for security reasons.

“Keeping in view security concerns of the accused, he is sent to Tihar jail with a direction to the jail superintendent and DCP 3rd Battalion, Delhi police, to produce him before the Allahabad court,” Jain said. Earlier, additional public prosecutor Rajeev Mohan said Ahmed, a sitting MP from Phulpur in Allahabad, was wanted in nine other criminal cases in UP.

Manoj Goel, counsel for the accused, expressed serious concerns over the security of the legislator in case he was taken to Allahabad, citing political rivalry with chief minister Mayawati.

Ahmed was nabbed by the special cell of Delhi police from an apartment in Pitampura in north-west Delhi on Thursday evening. He had been evading arrest for the last eight months.

Ahmed is allegedly involved in the murder of  BSP legislator Raju Pal. The murder was said to be a fallout of Pal’s rivalry with Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Azeem. Pal was shot dead in broad daylight in Allahabad on January 26, 2005, while he was on his way to his village to participate in a Republic Day function.

Ahmed was carrying a reward of Rs20,000 on his head and there was a non-bailable warrant against him since May 2007. The arrest must have come as a big relief to BSP chief Mayawati. The UP chief minister had recently alleged that Ahmed and UP gangster Brijesh Singh were plotting to kill her.
