Eighteen-year-old Wilson college student Aftab Mujawar is yet to come out of the shock of seeing four of his childhood friends die in a tragic car accident from which he miraculously escaped unhurt.

“He recognised his parents late on Tuesday evening. Till then he had not uttered a single word or shed a single tear, and had not even shown any signs of recognition when his parents spoke to him,” said Aftab’s aunt.

“His condition seems to be improving,” said a doctor at Harkisondas Hospital. Aftab was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday in a numbed state, a symptom of Acute Stress Syndrome, which patients who have witnessed death at close quarters experience.

Meanwhile Umang Saraiya, 17, another survivor of the crash is still in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Saifee Hospital, where his condition is said to be stable.

Hinduja College at Charni Road, which lost two of its students in the car crash on January 1, was closed on Wednesday to mourn the death of Yash Shah, 20, and Nitesh Damania, 17.

“Both the boys were very good at studies and actively took part in extra curricular activities,” said KR Patel, vice principal, of the college. Patel said that he had interacted with both the boys personally several times in the past two years.

Nitesh and Yash were classmates in SYJC Commerce, while Umang was also an SYJC student, but studied in a different division, he said.

“I remember Nitesh, who performed a really good dance in our annual day programme on December 18,” said Patel. “Yash was a polite and well behaved boy,” he recalled.

“When the news about the car crash reached our college, several of his classmates, particularly about 10 students from their group broke down,” Patel said.
