40 LTTE militants killed in clashes: Army

COLOMBO: Intensified gun battles between Sri Lankan security forces and the LTTE have left 40 militants and a soldier dead in the restive northern Sri Lanka, the Defence Ministry said here on Sunday.
   
Troops killed at least 33 members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the latest battles in Mannar district.
   
"Latest reports state that at least 33 militants were killed and 38 wounded yesterday when security forces made decisive inroads towards non-liberated Parappakandal area in North-western Mannar", it said.
   
"Troops advanced into Parappakandal West in the non-liberated areas of Mannar about 800 metres forward and took control over a total area of one square kilometre at the moment," Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.
    
The ministry said six soldiers were wounded in the clash but the Tigers claimed they killed at least 20 soldiers.
    
In another incident, two LTTE cadres were killed and three wounded when troops successfully retaliated an LTTE mortar attack at general area north of Ethawetunuwewa in Welioya on Saturday evening, the Media Centre for National Security said.
    
At Welioya, LTTE communication intercepts confirmed that two militants were killed and three injured in a clash on Saturday, the army said.
    
In another encounter, troops shot dead three LTTE militants. Two militants were also killed in Killali areas of Northern Jaffna on Saturday, the Army said. Five soldiers were injured in the incident.
    
In Manthottam area in Mannar, a solider was injured in an LTTE mortar fire, while in Adampan area in the district, one soldier was killed in an grenade attack by militants, the MCNS said.
    
The LTTE in a statement claimed that it killed 20 Sri Lankan soldiers along the Uyilankulam-Parappankandal frontiers in Mannar on Saturday.
   
"The Sri Lankan Armed Forces (SLAF) fighting units are already beaten back in two of the three fronts. Both the sides use heavy artilleries, Multi-Barrel Rocket Launchers and small mortars to provide tactical support fire to respective own troops", it claimed
    
The SLAF have lost at least 20 soldiers and over 40 other soldiers have sustained injuries so far, the LTTE statement claimed adding it lost three cadres.
