NEW DELHI: Gujarat's poll campaign this time too was a controversial affair, with the star campaigners of rival sides Narendra Modi and Sonia Gandhi doing their bit in the Assembly elections.

If it was 'Mian Musharraf' for Modi in the 2002 elections, the Assembly polls this time round saw Gandhi raising a stir with her 'merchants of death' remark.

Modi created a row through his remarks on the Sohrabuddin killings, while the Congress' catch phrase was 'Chak de Gujarat' to end 17 years of dry run.

But the BJP's 'Jeetega Gujarat' appears to have done the trick, with party leaders, including Modi, dubbing the victory as a setback for forces opposed to the state.

While the Congress projected the view that Modi was just a myth, the Chief Minister showed that he was a master communicator, whose magic has not waned.

In the previous elections, Modi had played on the significance of the election date of December 12 to urge people to demolish the Congress by saying, 'Baarah, Baarah ko Congress ke Baarah Bajaao'.

This time, he focused his attack on the Congress President and sought to project the ruling party at the Centre as being averse to the interests of Gujarat.

The elections saw the rebels in the BJP falling by the wayside as Modi ensured that the saffron sway continued even in Saurashtra, considered the hometurf of sulking leader Keshubhai Patel.
