NEW DELHI: BJP's victory in the Gujarat assembly elections has definitely put off the threat of mid-term polls, senior leader L K Advani said here.

Speaking to reporters here, the former deputy prime minister said that he was earlier expecting mid-term parliamentary polls early next year but the Gujarat result has changed the situation.

"This victory has certainly put off the possibility of mid-term polls," Advani said.

Congress and CPI (M) had adopted 'dramatically opposite' positions on the Indo-US nuclear deal and now "it will be interesting to see what stand they take", he said.

He said the victory had been made big by the adversaries of the BJP who kept up a strident attack on Modi.

"Never in the history of Indian politics had a central government gone to the extent of justifying the denial of a US visa to a chief minister," Advani said.

The theory that good governance can win elections would have taken a beating had the BJP lost in Gujarat, Advani said.
