KUALA LUMPUR: Three men from Tamil Nadu kicked-off their "World Peace" cycling tour of East Asia and Australia from here.

Forty-eight-year-old Senbaga Vaira Vanchinak Kuntrak Kothai Valavamara Vazhuthi, his stepbrother K Surendran (42), and nephew E Rajeshkumar (22), hope to complete their cycling tour in the next three months.

The three, all from Chennai, kicked off their "World Peace" tour here yesterday and will be travelling to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, Singapore and Australia.

Senbaga, who usually cycles around the globe alone, said he asked his stepbrother and nephew to accompany him.

He also expressed the hope of recording his cycling escapades in the Guinness Book of World Records.

"In all my 17 years of cycling, I have cycled as much as 986,000 km. By right, I have already beaten the present world record holder, an English professor, who managed to do only 643,700 km within 17 years," he said.

"But I don't want to register my name yet until I have cycled in the US, Britain, Canada and Africa, which I plan to complete by August."

Senbaga's love for cycling began after the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi.

On why he chose to start his tour in Malaysia, Senbaga said it was because of the "country's scenic beauty and the friendly people".

"I love to come to this country because of the friendly reception, I receive from Malaysians every time. We came here on Dec 4 and have cycled from Seremban to Kuala Lumpur so far. We plan to cycle to Ipoh and eventually to Bukit Kayu Hitam before making our way to Thailand," Senbaga said.

He said his nephew and stepbrother had also set records in India for various cycling events.

Senbaga's cycling tour is sponsored by the Tamil Nadu Government and the Srimad Dayanad Vedarsha Maha Vidyalaya Gautam Nagar school in New Delhi, where he teaches Mathematics and English.
