Prabhavati, 75, had been constantly praying for the past 20 months, seeking justice for “ladla beta” (most favourite son), Pramod. But on Tuesday, when Pravin was sentenced to life imprisonment, Prabhavati was stunned into silence.

For Prabhavati, it was a no-win situation. One son dead and another confined behind bars for life. The emotional trauma was too much to bear, even though she desperately tried to accept the tragedy in high spirit.

With emotions overriding their expressions, the entire Munde-Mahajan family huddled together in Munde’s apartment at Purna Building, Worli. Gopinath Munde said, “It was her (Prabhavati’s) ardent wish to see that her favourite son’s killer gets punished.

Pramodji’s mother has suffered lots of pain in her life. I sincerely pray to God that no other mother undergoes the ordeal she faced. Pramodji’s wife, Rekha, too went through very difficult times.”

Almost 45 minutes after the court verdict, Rekha was still sobbing. She walked out of the courtroom, wiping tears. Son Rahul hovered around, trying to console her.

Even the otherwise outspoken Poonam, her daughter, was silent. Munde kept referring to Pravin as an accused and refrained from taking his name directly. However, the family made it clear that they harboured no bitterness towards Pravin’s wife and children. Their crusade was against Pravin’s dastardly act.

“His act is heinous. Bhai chara ka khun kiya hain woh (he murdered brotherhood),” Munde said in a choked voice. “His crime is not confined to just the killing of an individual.

Pramod’s death didn’t hurt his family only. It was a terrible loss for both BJP and the nation.” Controlling his rage, Munde added, “We have no bitterness towards Pravin’ wife (Sarangi) and their children. He has caused lots of trouble for them too. Our sympathies are with Sarangi and the children.”
