PUDUCHERRY: Seeking divine blessings for Congress president Sonia Gandhi on her 61st birthday on Sunday, a group of Congress workers dragged a golden chariot along the premises of Sri Manakula Vinayakar temple here.

The team of Congress workers were led by Oulgaret municipal council chairman N S J Jayabal. Chairperson of State Women`s Commission S Kamalini also had joined the team.

At a function organised at the Pradesh Congress Committee office here as part of the birthday celebrations, PCC president P Shanmugham said Sonia Gandhi was 'zealously following the path shown by former prime ministers Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi in serving the nation and also in ameliorating the lot of the poor'.

He said that only Congress was keen about keeping people of all religions and castes together and also granting a quota of 33 per cent for women in legislatures. But other parties which had 'vested interests' were creating roadblocks, he said.

However, no effort was being spared by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi and all the progressive members in the Congress to achieve the goal, he said.
