Hordes of pilgrims who converged on Shivaji Park for the Ambedkar rally have damaged the pitches on the ground and have let it unusable for another ten days.
“The eight pitches were covered with plastic sheet last year. The BMC has been negligent on its part in not covering the pitches this year and the restoration work will take ten days,” said Sangam Lad, secretary of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).
However, Lad also added saying, “BMC is cooperating and doing a good job. We only hope the pandals and debris is removed soon.”
The secretary of MCA said that the BMC should employ more workers to remove the pandals quickly. Lad said that there was no issue about youngsters compromising the ground on the auspicious day. “It’s a big day for the Dalits and we understand. After all, the land belongs to civic body.
However, he objected to political parties organise rallies every now and then. “What about the Jaanta Raja programme organised for 20 days? We have a problem with that?” said Lad.
Bimal Roy, president, Bengal Club at Shivaji Park said, “We are not against the rally. It’s a pilgrimage and we understand. But the BMC should wake up to our problems. Can’t there be a change in the venue? Youngsters like Deepak Thokale, 21, and Shahrukh Vajir Khan, 15, who practise on the ground regularly, were seen cleaning the grounds. “We are used to the rallies now,” said Thokale.
When assistant municipal commissioner, G (N) ward office NV Pai was contacted he said, “This year, the crowd arrived in the city on December 3, a day before
the Mahaparinirvan Day. So maybe some pitches were left out in the process.”
